History of the Texas State Hotel

What Was Here Before?

The Club Quarters Hotel is located at 720 Fannin Street in downtown Houston. This area, known as Block 80, has a long history. A church called the First Baptist Church stood on this exact spot from 1883 to 1905.

Later, the land was empty for about 20 years. Before the hotel was built, this part of Houston mostly had homes. Over time, it changed to have more businesses. By 1924, Block 80 was completely filled with commercial buildings.

Building the Hotel

The Texas State Hotel was designed by a local architect named Joseph Finger. It is a 16-story building made with a strong steel frame. The hotel was owned by a well-known businessman, Jesse H. Jones.

The hotel was originally planned to be ready for a big event, the 1928 Democratic National Convention. However, there were some problems with building and money. So, it wasn't finished until 1929. Jesse Holman Jones helped make sure the project was completed.

Later, in the 1980s, the University of Texas owned the hotel. A company tried to run it, but it wasn't making money, so it closed down.

The hotel was sold at an auction in 1987. A company related to Texaco bought it. The building then remained empty for a while. Eventually, a group called Fannin & Rusk, LP took over the property to fix it up.

The renovation of the Texas State Hotel was a big success. It won the 2006 Good Brick Award. This award is given by the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance. It honors projects that do a great job of preserving historic buildings. Since reopening, the hotel has also had a restaurant on its ground floor.

Living at the Hotel

The Club Quarters Hotel isn't just for guests visiting Houston. It also has several homes inside the building. People who live there can use the same services and features as the hotel guests.

Children living in these residences attend schools in the Houston Independent School District (HISD). They are zoned to the Gregory-Lincoln Education Center for grades K-8. For high school, they attend Northside High School.
