A Busy Past

Clyde was once a very important place for Bryan County. It used to be the county seat. This means it was where the main government offices were located. It was like the capital city for the county. People would go there for official business.

The town was named after a famous Scottish soldier, Colin Campbell, 1st Baron Clyde. He was a Field Marshal, which is a very high rank in the army. He lived from 1792 to 1863. Another name for the town was "Eden."

Clyde even had its own post office. It opened in 1887. People could send and receive letters and packages there. The post office stayed open for many years, until 1941. After that, the town slowly faded away.
