The Clydebank Co-operative Society Limited is a unique business in Scotland. It is the smallest consumers' co-operative in the country. This means it is owned and run by its members, who are also its customers. The co-op is based in the town of Clydebank, which is close to Glasgow.
In Scotland, there are only three main consumer co-operative groups. These are Clydebank Co-op, Scotmid, and The Co-operative Group. What makes Clydebank Co-op special is that it has not joined with any larger regional or national co-operative groups. It remains independent.
The Clydebank Co-op started way back in 1881. In its early days, it joined the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society. This was a larger group that helped co-ops buy goods together. Before World War II, a community leader named Jenny Hyslop helped organize the society.
Until 2013, Clydebank Co-op bought its products through a group called the Co-operative Retail Trading Group (CRTG). This group was managed by The Co-operative Group. However, in 2013 and 2014, Clydebank Co-op decided to change its suppliers. It started buying from a local wholesaler called JW Filshill. The co-op also began to use Filshill's KeyStore brand in its stores.
Our Stores
As of 2015, the Clydebank Co-op runs seven food stores. These stores vary in size. The largest store is on Dunn Street in Dalmuir. It is over 6,500 square feet. The smallest store is about 1,800 square feet. It is located at Great Western Road and Sylvania Way South in Clydebank.
Here are the locations of the co-op's stores:
- Great Western Road, Knightswood
- Faifley Road, Faifley
- Sylvania Way South, Clydebank
- Kilbowie Road, Clydebank

In 2014, the co-op closed its food store in Hardgate. This reduced the number of its food stores from seven to six. However, the Hardgate store later reopened. It now operates as a Co-op/KeyStore More and is still open for business.
