Coal Valley, also known as Cormick, is a small place in Walker County, Alabama, United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it does not have its own local government.
History of Coal Valley
Coal Valley got its name because there was a lot of coal in the ground nearby. People started opening coal mines here after the Georgia Pacific Railway was finished. The railway made it easier to transport the coal.
The coal mines in Coal Valley were part of an important event in 1920. Many coal miners in Alabama stopped working to ask for better pay and conditions. This event is known as the 1920 Alabama coal strike.
A post office served the community for many years. It was called Cormick from 1890 to 1891. Then, it changed its name to Coal Valley and operated from 1891 until 1951.
