What the Coat of Arms Looks Like

The Coat of Arms of Tonga is a detailed design that tells a story about the nation. It has a main shield divided into four parts.

  • The top left section is gold and shows three white six-pointed stars. These stars are thought to represent the three main island groups of Tonga: Tongatapu, Vavaʻu, and Haʻapai.
  • The top right section is red and features the Royal Crown of Tonga. This crown symbolizes the King and the royal family, showing that Tonga is a monarchy.
  • The bottom left section is blue and has a white dove flying. The dove holds a green olive branch in its beak. This part represents peace, hope, and the Christian faith of the Tongan people.
  • The bottom right section is gold and displays three white swords crossed over each other. These swords symbolize the three royal lines or dynasties of Tonga. They also represent the strength and defense of the nation.

In the very center of the shield, there is a white six-pointed star with a red cross on it. This central symbol highlights the strong Christian beliefs of Tonga.

Above the shield, there is a crest. The crest shows the Royal Crown of Tonga placed inside a wreath made of olive branches. This adds another layer of meaning, combining royalty with peace.

On either side of the shield, there are two flags of Tonga. These flags act as supporters, holding up the shield.

Below the shield, there is a ribbon with the national motto written on it. The motto is Ko e ʻOtua mo Tonga ko hoku Tofiʻa. This means "God and Tonga are my inheritance." It shows the deep connection between faith, country, and the legacy of the Tongan people.
