Cocco's Early Life
Cocco dreamed of becoming a professional ballerina. She went to many ballet auditions. To help pay for her trip to a ballet audition in Tokyo, she also tried out for singing roles. Even though she didn't get the ballet part, her singing impressed the judges. Soon after, she signed a contract with Victor Entertainment, a big music company.
Cocco's Music Journey
Cocco started her music career in 1996. Her first music was an EP (a short album) called Cocko. A song from this EP, Sing a Song ~No Music, No Life~, was even used in a TV ad for Tower Records in Japan.
In 1997, she officially changed her name to "Cocco." She then released her first major single, Countdown. A full album quickly followed. Cocco became very popular in Japan in 1998 with her hit song Tsuyoku Hakanaimonotachi. This song sold over 250,000 copies!
Cocco released three more albums: Kumuiuta in 1998, Rapunzel in 2000, and Sangurōzu in 2001. Before Sangurōzu came out, Cocco announced she was taking a break from music. Later that year, her record label released a special collection of her best songs and some new ones.
Cocco's Return to Music
Cocco's break from music didn't last very long. In 2002, she released her first art book. In 2003, she organized a special concert to help clean up beaches in Okinawa. A documentary about this event, called Heaven's Hell, was released later that year.
In 2004, Cocco appeared on a cover album for another artist. She also released her second book, which came with a special song. In 2005, she worked with a photographer and singer named Nanaco on a project called The Bird.
Cocco also formed a band called Singer Songer in 2004. She teamed up with Shigeru Kishida from the band Quruli and other talented musicians. Singer Songer released a single and an album in 2005. Their music was often happier than Cocco's solo songs.
Cocco continued to write for newspapers and magazines. In 2007, she performed at the Live Earth concert in Japan. After releasing her album Kira Kira, she moved to the UK to study photography.
In 2010, Cocco published her first long novel. She also performed at a big music festival and released her own album, Emerald. She even wrote a theme song for a movie made by a 14-year-old director! Cocco decided to help the young director after he sent her a letter.
In 2011, Cocco and her friends released a film called Inspired movies. She also made her acting debut in the movie KOTOKO. She helped with the art and music for the film too. In 2018, she sang a cover song for a tribute album.
