Early Life and Start in Music
Cocco always dreamed of becoming a professional ballerina. She went to many ballet auditions. To pay for a big ballet audition in Tokyo, she decided to try out for singing auditions. She didn't get the ballet part, but the judges at the singing audition were very impressed by her. Because of this, she later signed with Victor Entertainment, a major music company.
Music Career
Cocco started her music journey in 1996 under the name "Cocko." She released her first music, an EP (which is like a mini-album), called Cocko. One of her songs, Sing a Song ~No Music, No Life~, was even used in an advertisement for Tower Records in Japan!
In 1997, Cocco changed her stage name to "Cocco." She released her first official single, Countdown. Soon after, she released her first full album. Her big breakthrough came in 1998 with the song Tsuyoku Hakanaimonotachi. This song was a huge hit in Japan, selling over 250,000 copies!
Cocco continued to release popular albums like Kumuiuta (1998), Rapunzel (2000), and Sangurōzu (2001). Before Sangurōzu came out, Cocco announced she was taking a break from music. Later that year, her music label released a collection of her best songs, including some that had never been heard before.
Her break from music didn't last too long. In 2002, Cocco published her first art book. In 2003, she organized a special concert to help clean up beaches in Okinawa. A documentary film about this event was released later that year.
Cocco also started writing. In 2004, she published her second book, which came with a special song. She also worked with other artists. In 2005, she formed a band called Singer Songer with members from other Japanese rock groups like Quruli and Cornelius. Their music was often happier and had a country feel.
Cocco continued to explore her creativity. She wrote essays for newspapers and magazines. In 2007, she performed at the Live Earth concert in Japan, which was a big event to raise awareness about the environment. After releasing her album Kira Kira, she moved to the UK to study photography.
In 2010, Cocco published her first long novel. She also released Emerald, her first album that she produced herself. She even helped a 14-year-old director named Ryugo Nakamura by writing the theme song for his first movie. She was inspired by his passion and wanted to support him.
In 2011, Cocco made her acting debut in the movie KOTOKO. She also helped with the movie's art and music.
