What Does This Cactus Look Like?
Cochemiea guelzowiana is a plant that lives for many years. It starts as a single, round, fleshy stem. As it gets older, it grows into groups of stems.
Stems and Spines
- The stems are shaped like a ball, usually about 7 inches (18 cm) tall. They can be 4 to 10 inches (10-25 cm) wide.
- They have cone-shaped or cylinder-shaped bumps called tubercules.
- Unlike some other cacti, these stems do not have a milky sap called latex.
- This cactus has two types of spines:
- Central spines: There are 1 to 6 thin, needle-like spines in the center. They are yellowish-red and can be 8 to 25 millimeters long.
- Radial spines: Around the central spines, there are 60 to 80 longer, twisted spines. These are about 15 millimeters long.
