The Cocosates were an ancient tribe. They lived in a region called Aquitani in what is now southwestern France. They were around during the Iron Age, a time when people started using iron tools.

Sometimes they were also called the Cocosates Sexsignani. They were part of a larger group of people known as the Aquitani.

What's in a Name?

The Cocosates tribe is mentioned in old writings. A famous Roman leader, Julius Caesar, wrote about them around 50 BC. He called them Cocosates.

Later, a Roman writer named Pliny the Elder also mentioned them. Around 50 AD, he called them Cocosates Sexsignani.

We don't know for sure what their name means. Some experts think it might come from an old word, cocos. This word meant 'scarlet red' in the Gaulish language. Red was a color often linked to war and used in names back then.

Where Did They Live?

The Cocosates lived in the area that is now the Landes region of France. Their land was near the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

To their east were the Oscidates and Sotiates tribes. To the north lived the Boii. South of them were the Tarbelli and Tarusates tribes.

Their main town was called Caequosa. Today, this place is known as Sescouze, near the town of Castets.

How Were They Organized?

The Cocosates were not just one group. They were a confederation, which means they were a group of six smaller tribes working together.

They were likely connected to the powerful Tarbelli tribe nearby. The Cocosates might have been their 'clients', meaning they had a special relationship. This could involve trading or even military support.
