History of the Codex Alimentarius Austriacus
For a long time, the Codex Alimentarius Austriacus was mostly known only in German-speaking countries. But it later became very important! It even gave its name to the international Codex Alimentarius Commission. This international group works together to create food standards for the whole world. The international Codex was created by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
The original Austrian Codex was finished between 1910 and 1917 by a person named O. Dafert. However, it didn't become a real law in Austria until 1975.
In the 1950s, an Austrian named Hans Frenzel worked hard to create a Europe-wide food guide based on the Austrian model. His efforts led to the creation of the Council of the Codex Alimentarius Europaeus in 1958. This council was supported by international groups focused on farming and chemistry.
In 1975, the committee for the Codex Alimentarius Austriacus was changed. This was done to make sure it fit with Austria's food laws. Austria is known for having some of the strictest food laws in the world!
