History of Coeneo
In 1530, a special person named Friar Martín de la Coruña arrived in the lands that are now Coeneo. He was a religious leader who wanted to teach people about the Catholic faith. The local people quickly trusted and respected him. Many of them decided to become Catholic.
However, a Spanish explorer named Nuño de Guzmán came later. He tried to take things from the native people and treat them badly. Because of this, the people went back into the mountains. All the good work Friar Martín had done was temporarily lost.
Later, another Friar named Jacob Dacian continued the work. He started talking with the people again. In 1542, a plan was made for some families to move to the place we now call Coeneo. They moved because there wasn't enough water in their old area.
Once the new community was set up, they started building. They planned a church, a town square, and chose "La Virgen del Rosario" as their special protector.
