Coffee is a warm, brownish color. It gets its name from the color of coffee beans before they are roasted. Just like there are many kinds of coffee beans, the exact shade of "coffee" can vary a little, but it's generally a rich, dark brown.
People started using "coffee" as a color name in the English language a long time ago, around 1695. This means the color has been recognized and named for over 300 years!
Different Shades of Coffee
You might notice that coffee itself comes in many shades, from light to dark. Because of this, there are also different color names inspired by coffee drinks:
- Café au Lait: This French name means "coffee with milk." It's a lighter, creamy brown color, like coffee mixed with a lot of milk. This color name first appeared in English in 1839.
- Café Noir: This means "black coffee" in French. It's a very dark brown, almost black, just like strong black coffee. This color name became popular in English in 1928.
These names help describe the many beautiful brown shades that remind us of coffee.
