Neologism facts for kids
A neologism is a word or phrase that is quite new. It's usually less than 15 to 20 years old. Think of it as a fresh word that people have started using. Sometimes, we know exactly who first used a neologism, or when and where it appeared. The word "neologism" comes from Greek, meaning "new word." It first appeared in English in 1772.
Sometimes, a neologism isn't a completely new word. It can be an old word used in a brand new way. This is like giving an existing word a new job! For example, the word "mouse" used to just mean an animal, but now it also means a computer device. If someone invents a word that only they use, it's called a protologism.
New Words and the Brain
Sometimes, people create words that only make sense to them. This is normal for young children as they learn to speak. But for adults, creating words that no one else understands can sometimes be a sign of a mental illness. For example, people with schizophrenia might use neologisms. Also, people with autism might invent their own words.
Creating new words can also happen after a brain injury. This might be from a stroke or a head injury. In these cases, it's part of a condition called aphasia, which affects how people use and understand language.
New Ideas in Religion
In theology, which is the study of religious beliefs, a neologism can mean a new idea or teaching. For example, Transcendentalism was a new way of thinking about religion and philosophy. So, a "neologist" in this sense is someone who suggests a new religious idea or a new way to understand old religious texts.
