The area around Colònia de Sant Pere has a long and interesting past. Many different groups have ruled this land over the centuries.
Roman Times in Majorca
Long ago, around 123 BC, the area where Colònia de Sant Pere is now became part of the powerful Roman Empire. A Roman general named Quintus Caecilius Metellus Balearicus conquered the Balearic Islands. This brought Roman culture and rule to Majorca.
Byzantine and Islamic Influence
Later, in 534 AD, the area became part of the Byzantine Empire. This empire was the eastern part of the old Roman Empire. Then, starting in 707 AD, the Balearic Islands came under Islamic rule. Return to the Crown
In 1229, King James I the Conqueror took over the entire island of Majorca. This brought the island back under Christian rule. Then, in 1344, King Peter IV of Aragon officially made the Balearic Islands part of his kingdom again. Since then, the area of Colònia de Sant Pere has remained under the rule of the Spanish crown.
