Colón is one of the 18 main areas, called departments, in Honduras. It was created on December 19, 1881. The main city and capital of Colón is Trujillo. Another important city in the department is Tocoa.

Trujillo is a historic place. It was where the very first Catholic Mass was held on the American mainland. This happened when Christopher Columbus arrived on the Honduran coast in 1502.

Colón is home to many Garifuna communities. The Garifuna are descendants of African and Indigenous Caribbean people. The department also has beautiful, untouched beaches and national parks filled with rainforests.

You can find the Fort of Santa Barbara in Colón. This fort was built by the Spanish a long time ago. It's famous because an American adventurer named William Walker met his end there in Trujillo. His remains are buried in the city's graveyard.

The Colón department covers a total area of about 8,276 square kilometers. In 2013, around 319,786 people lived there.

Cities and Towns

Colón department is divided into 10 smaller areas called municipalities. Each municipality has its own local government.
