Colah B. Tawkin's Career
Colah B. Tawkin used to work as a professional truck driver. She began her career in broadcasting, which means making podcasts, in 2019. She noticed that there was no podcast that combined gardening with Black culture. So, she decided to create one herself!
Her podcast, Black in the Garden, quickly became a big hit. It reached the Top Ten on Apple's list of Home & Garden Podcasts. Apple even featured it during Black History Month in 2021.
Colah's work aims to show more Black people in the world of gardening. She provides a platform where the voices of Black farmers and garden lovers can be heard. She says that famous writer Toni Morrison and civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer inspire her. Their ideas help shape the "black gardening experience" that her podcast shares.
The New York City Food Policy Centre suggested Black in the Garden to people. They said it was great for those who want to learn how race and culture have affected our food system, both in the past and today.
