The Story of Colcapirhua
Becoming a Municipality
Colcapirhua officially became its own municipality on April 15, 1985. This was a big step for the town. It took 27 years for this to happen. The nearby municipality of Quillacollo strongly opposed it for a long time.
Colcapirhua is the newest municipality in the Quillacollo Province. It was created because the people felt ignored. The authorities in Quillacollo were not meeting the needs of Colcapirhua's residents.
Ancient Traditions
Long ago, the people of this area were famous for making pottery. They created jars, pots, and vases from mud and clay. Because of their skill, they were called "Mank'a llutas" in Quechua. This means "makers of pots."
The Fight for Independence
The process to become a separate municipality started on August 25, 1958. It finally ended with a new law on April 15, 1985. This law was passed during the presidency of Hernán Siles Suazo. The law was confirmed again on March 18, 1987. This happened when Victor Paz Estenssoro was president. This is how Colcapirhua became its own municipality. However, its borders were not exactly what was first planned.
What Colcapirhua Means
The name Colcapirhua comes from two Quechua words. "Qolque" means money, and "pirwua" means a place where corn was stored. Today, the mayor of Colcapirhua is Mario Severich Bustamante.
