How Coldwater Began
Coldwater was started on a large ranch owned by William B. Slaughter. He was the son of another famous rancher, C.C. Slaughter. The town grew quickly in its early years.
Life in Early Coldwater
By 1891, Coldwater had several important buildings. These included a hotel, a courthouse, and a jail. There was also a mercantile store, which was like a general store where people could buy many different things.
In 1893, the town even got its own newspaper. It was called the Sherman County Banner. Charles Randolph and George Loomis started this newspaper.
Coldwater's Later Years
Over time, Coldwater became less active. The town's post office closed down in 1907. Even though the town was shrinking, a brick house on the old ranch was still used as a church until 1940.
Today, Coldwater is known for something different. It is now the location of the Coldwater gas field, which is an area where natural gas is found.
