Coles Mills, Ohio facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Coles Mills is what people call a ghost town in Delaware County, Ohio. A ghost town is a place where most or all people have left, and it's often empty or has very few residents. We don't know the exact spot where Coles Mills used to be.

What Was Coles Mills?

Coles Mills was once a small community, but it didn't last very long. It was named after a man named Joseph C. Cole.

When Was Coles Mills Active?

A post office opened in Coles Mills in 1841. This means there were enough people living there to need a way to send and receive mail. However, the post office closed just 15 years later, in 1856. This often happens when a town starts to shrink or people move away.

What Did Joseph C. Cole Do?

Joseph C. Cole operated two important businesses in the area:

  • A sawmill: This mill would cut logs into lumber, which was used for building houses and other structures.
  • A gristmill: This mill would grind grain, like corn or wheat, into flour. Flour was essential for making bread and other foods.

These mills were likely the main reason the community of Coles Mills started in the first place. When the mills stopped operating, or people found better places to live and work, the town slowly disappeared.
