Life of Colin Lauder
Family and Early Life
Colin Lauder came from a family of surgeons. His father, George Lauder, was also a surgeon and a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. His grandfather, John Lauder, was also a surgeon and a leader in the College. This shows that being a surgeon was a family tradition for the Lauders!
Colin Lauder studied to become a surgeon at Glasgow University. While there, he became good friends with Alexander Edgar, whose brother Handyside Edgar was also studying with him.
Becoming a Surgeon
After his training, Colin Lauder worked as a surgeon in the 17th Regiment of Foot, which was an army group, from 1770 to 1772.
In 1772, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. This was a big achievement, showing he was a highly skilled surgeon. In the same year, he became a burgess of Edinburgh, following in his father's footsteps. In 1773, he helped start a group called the Aesculapian Club.
Working with Famous People
Dr. Colin Lauder was the surgeon for a very famous Scottish thinker named David Hume. This was recorded in some old papers from 1776. Colin Lauder lived in Edinburgh, on a street called Carrubbers Close, which is near the famous Royal Mile.

Records show that Colin Lauder owned land and property in Edinburgh. Later in his life, he lived at Fala House in Midlothian.
