The Collegiate Church of San Pedro de Cervatos is an amazing old church in Campoo de Enmedio, Spain. It's also known by its Spanish name, Colegiata de San Pedro de Cervatos. This special church was built a very long time ago, around the year 1129! Because it's so important, it has been protected as a national treasure since 1895.

Exploring the Church

The Main Entrance

The main entrance of the church is super cool! It has many curved arches, called archivolts, that frame the doorway. Above the door, there's a carved stone panel called a tympanum. It's covered in beautiful plant designs that look a bit like art from old Al-Andalus (a part of Spain with a rich history).

This carved panel rests on two stone beams, called lintels. The top beam has six carved lions, and the one below it has more plant designs. The curved arches themselves are simple, but they rest on special carved tops of columns, called capitals. These capitals are decorated with cool animals and birds.

The doorway is also protected by a stone ledge, or cornice. This ledge is held up by carved supports called corbels. These corbels show figures of dancers, monkeys, and other fantastic creatures! Between these supports, there are carved panels called metopes, with images of animals, birds, and strange characters.

On the right side of the doorway, there's an old message written in Latin. It tells us that the church was built around the year 1129. Another Latin message explains that the church was made sacred to Saint Peter in the year 1199 by Bishop Marin.

The Back of the Church (Apse)

The outside of the apse, which is the rounded or multi-sided end of the church, has many different carved designs. You can see these interesting carvings around the windows and on the supports (brackets) under the roof's edge.

Inside the Church

When you go inside, you'll find one large open space, called a nave. The ceiling is covered with Gothic vaults, which are special arched roofs. Only the very front part of the church, called the head, still has its original Romanesque style.

The inside of the apse is decorated with a row of round arches, like a fancy hallway. These arches stand on carved capitals, which are the tops of columns. These designs were inspired by the art of Cluny, a famous monastery. The capitals are decorated with either plant designs or figures of fantastic animals and birds.

The Bell Tower

The tall bell tower was not built at the same time as the rest of the church. It was probably added later, around the end of the 12th century. This was about the same time that Bishop Marin made the church sacred.
