The Collegium of Black Women Philosophers (CBWP) is a special group created to help black women philosophers. It aims to make sure more people know about black women in the field of philosophy. It also helps these women connect with each other and find mentors. The group is currently based at Penn State University.
History of CBWP
The Collegium of Black Women Philosophers held its first meeting in 2007. The group was started by Kathryn Belle. She felt it was very important to address the small number of black women working in philosophy.
Kathryn Belle reached out to black women philosophers by email. She was able to contact all thirty-one African American women professors in philosophy at the time. Many of them attended the first conference. This first big meeting happened at Vanderbilt University in 2008. A very important person, Joyce Mitchell Cook, was there. She was the first African American woman to earn a PhD in philosophy.
