How CBWP Started
The idea for CBWP began in 2007. A woman named Kathryn Belle started the group. She noticed that there were not many black women in the field of philosophy. Kathryn Belle felt it was important to change this.
She reached out to black women professors by email. She found thirty-one African American women professors. Many of them were able to come to the first meeting.
The first big conference for CBWP happened in 2008. It was held at Vanderbilt University. An important person at this conference was Joyce Mitchell Cook. She was the very first African American woman to earn a PhD in philosophy.
