Exploring the Collins and Townley Streets District
The Asylum Hill area in Hartford used to be farmland. But by the mid-1850s, it started to become a place where people lived. Many new homes were built there.
A Look at Collins Street Homes
Collins Street has what people believe is its oldest house at number 287. This house was once part of the Collins family's large property. Over the next few decades, the area south of Collins Street grew into a neighborhood. It has many different styles of houses, much like it does today.
The Unique Style of Townley Street
Townley Street has a very consistent look. You'll see many brick and brownstone homes there. These houses are mostly Italianate and Second Empire styles. They were built for one or two families.
Architectural Mix on Other Streets
The area shaped like a "U" by Collins, Atwood, and Willard Streets is special. Here, you'll find many Shingle style houses. Most of these homes have brick on the first floor. Their upper levels are covered in wooden shingles. They also have touches of Colonial Revival design.
East of Willard Street, Collins Street has a line of slightly older homes. These houses are in the Queen Anne and Italianate styles. We even know the architect for two of these houses! George Keller designed both 171 Collins Street and 970 Asylum Avenue.
