Colm Mac Con Iomaire is an Irish musician and composer. He plays the violin and keyboards, and also sings. He is a member of the popular band The Frames. Colm was born in Blackrock, Dublin, Ireland. His father, Liam Mac Con Iomaire, was a well-known writer, journalist, and broadcaster.

Early Life and Music

School Days and First Band

Colm went to Coláiste Eoin, which is an Irish Language secondary school in County Dublin. While he was still in school, in 1987, he helped start an Irish folk group called Kíla. This was his first experience playing in a band.

Joining The Frames

Colm Mac Con Iomaire joined the band The Frames in 1990. He plays a big part in their music, using his violin and keyboard skills. He also has a strong interest in the Irish Language. This interest led The Frames to create songs in Irish for a charity called Concern. These songs were released during Seachtain na Gaeilge, which is a special week celebrating the Irish language.

For example, in 2005, they released an Irish version of their song "Locusts" called "Lócáistí" on an album called SnaG 05. In 2006, they released another Irish song called "Pian agus Ciúnas" on the album Ceol '06.

Working with Other Musicians

Touring and Collaborations

Since 2006, Colm has also toured with the band The Swell Season. He played the violin on their album Strict Joy, which came out in 2008.

Colm has also played violin for other famous musicians. He played on David Gray's album White Ladder in 1998, on the song "Silver Lining." In 2002, he played violin for Damien Rice on his well-known album "O." Colm also helped finish his friend Mic Christopher's only solo album, "Skylarking," which was also released in 2002.

Solo Music Projects

Creating His Own Albums

Besides playing with bands, Colm Mac Con Iomaire also creates his own music. He has released several solo albums.

His first solo album, The Hare's Corner (which is Cúinne an Ghiorria in Irish), came out in 2008. It was even nominated for an award in 2009 for Best Traditional/Folk Album.

His second solo album, And Now the Weather (Agus Anois an Aimsir), was released in April 2015. His third solo album, The River Holds Its Breath (Tost ar an Abhainn), was released in 2019.

Film Appearance

Colm also had a small role in the 1991 movie The Commitments.
