Colmenar is a small town, also called a municipality, in southern Spain. It is located in the province of Málaga, which is part of the region of Andalusia.

People have lived in the area around Colmenar for a very long time. This goes back to the Neolithic age, a time when people first started farming. We know this because old remains have been found in a nearby cave called Cueva de las Pulseras.

The town got its name, Colmenar, because of a farm that had many beehives. "Colmenar" means "apiary" (a place for bees) in Spanish. The village officially started in 1487. However, it did not become an independent town until 1777. Today, Colmenar is important for healthcare in its region. It houses the main medical center for the area.

One of the most important places in Colmenar is the hermitage of La Santísima Virgen de la Candelaria. A hermitage is a small church or chapel. This one sits on top of a hill, looking over the village and the valleys around it.

The hermitage was built in the 1600s. Today, it is recognized as a historical local monument. This special building is dedicated to the patron saint of Colmenar. A patron saint is like a special protector for a town or group of people.
