The Colonial Apartments is a cool old apartment building located at 51-53 High Street in Bangor, Maine. It was built way back in 1919. This building is special because it's one of the oldest and best-kept apartment houses in Bangor. It was built for people who had a good income. In 2012, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important historical places in the United States.

What Makes the Colonial Apartments Special?

The Colonial Apartments building is found near the edge of Bangor's main business area. It stands on the west side of High Street. This building is three stories tall and made of brick. It was designed in a style called Colonial Revival. This style looks back to the architecture of early American homes.

The building has a flat roof and simple edges. It also has tall, flat columns called pilasters at its corners. In the middle of the front, there are wooden porches that match on both sides.

Inside the Apartments

The inside of the building is split into six apartments. There are two apartments on each floor. A wall in the middle separates them. Each side has its own staircase. The apartments still have many of their original features. These include old fireplaces and wooden details.

A Look Back at History

The Colonial Apartments building was finished in 1919. It was designed by a local architect named Victor Hodgins. Before this building, a much larger housing complex stood on the same spot. That complex was destroyed by a fire.

New Way of Living

This apartment house was one of the first buildings in Bangor made just for apartments. Before this, most multi-family homes were "tenement-style." These were often for workers and had been around since the 1890s. The Colonial Apartments were different. They were built in a neighborhood with nicer, middle-class houses.

People who worked in office jobs often lived here. It was also common for single women to live in these apartments. Sometimes, two women would live together, like a widowed mother and her adult daughter. This showed a new trend. Before this, single women usually lived with private families or in shared boarding houses.
