Discover the Colonial Quarter's Past
The Colonial Quarter first opened in 1963. Back then, it was known as the Colonial Spanish Quarter. It was like a "living museum." This means people dressed up and acted out what life was like in St. Augustine during the 1740s.
Life in St. Augustine in the 1740s
In the 1740s, Spain was in charge of this area. Most people living in St. Augustine were from Spain or had Spanish family. The museum showed how they lived, worked, and spent their days. It was a great way to step back in time!
The living museum was open until 2011. It was on a piece of land about 2-acre (8,100 m2) in size. The University of Florida owned the land, and the City of St. Augustine helped manage it.
The Colonial Quarter's New Beginning
In September 2012, a company called Colonial Quarter LLC took over the site. This company is owned by Pat Croce. He also owns the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum, which is right next door. The University of Florida and Colonial Quarter LLC made an agreement for the company to run the historical site.
Renovating and Reopening the Site
Work began quickly to update the area. They decided to change the name to just "Colonial Quarter," removing "Spanish." By November 2012, signs announced that the new site would open in spring 2013. It officially opened its doors on March 16, 2013.
Since then, the Colonial Quarter has become a very popular spot. It's known for its outdoor stage where local bands play music almost every night. There are also picnic tables under trees, lit by pretty lanterns. It's a perfect place to relax, listen to music, and enjoy the evening.
