Colva Mary Roney-Dougal OBE is a British mathematician. She studies special areas of math called group theory and computational algebra. These fields help us understand patterns and solve problems using computers.
She is a Professor of Pure Mathematics at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. She also leads a research center there that uses computers to solve math problems. Colva Roney-Dougal is also known for making math interesting and easy to understand for everyone. She has appeared on BBC radio shows like In Our Time and The Infinite Monkey Cage. On these shows, she talked about big math ideas like infinity and the work of famous mathematicians.
Learning About Math
Colva Roney-Dougal earned her PhD degree from the University of London in 2001. Her main research project, called a dissertation, was about special groups of numbers. Her professor, Peter Cameron, guided her work.
Writing a Book
Colva Roney-Dougal helped write a math book with John Bray and Derek Holt. The book is called The Maximal Subgroups of the Low-Dimensional Finite Classical Groups. It was published in 2013 by the London Mathematical Society and Cambridge University Press.
Special Awards
In 2015, Colva Roney-Dougal received the first Cheryl E. Praeger Visiting Research Fellowship. This award helped her visit the University of Western Australia to do more research.
In 2024, she was given a special honor called the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). This award was for her great work in education and mathematics.
