The Comal County Courthouse is an important building in New Braunfels, Texas. It is located in the state of Texas in the United States. This historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It was also named a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1993.

What is the Comal County Courthouse?

The Comal County Courthouse is where important county business happens. This includes things like court cases and official records. It is a beautiful building with a long history.

The First Courthouse

Comal County has had two main courthouses. The first one was built around 1860. It was designed by an architect named Wilhelm Thielepape.

However, by the late 1890s, this first courthouse was getting old and worn out. It was no longer in good condition.

Designing the Current Courthouse

The county decided they needed a new courthouse. The current building was designed by a famous architect named James Riely Gordon. It was finished in 1898.

Gordon designed the courthouse in the Romanesque Revival style. This style often uses round arches, thick walls, and sturdy stone.

Other architects, like Albert Felix Beckmann, also submitted designs. To help them choose, county leaders visited the Gonzales County Courthouse. This courthouse in Gonzales, Texas was also designed by Gordon. They liked his work there!

Bringing the Courthouse Back to Life

In 2013, the Comal County Courthouse looked brand new again. It went through a big restoration project. This project took three years to complete.

During the restoration, two parts that had been added to the building were removed. Workers also carefully restored or copied the original paint, tiles, doors, and furniture.

The building has three stories. On top, there is a stone tower with a decorative edge called a cornice.
