Comeback sheep facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Comeback is a special type of domestic sheep that first came from Australia. These sheep are created by carefully mixing different sheep breeds. They are a cross between British Longwool sheep and Merinos.

Farmers breed Comeback sheep mainly for two reasons: their fine, high-quality wool and their meat. This unique mix helps create wool that is very soft and fine. Other sheep breeds like Bond, Cormo, and Polwarth also produce similar wool.

What Makes Comeback Sheep Special?

Comeback sheep have wool that is quite thick and long. The wool fibers are usually about 11 cm (4.3 in) long. The thickness of each wool fiber, called its diameter, is typically between 21 and 25 microns. A micron is a very tiny unit of measurement, showing how fine the wool is.

These sheep are good at living in parts of Australia that get a lot of rain. Even though they look a bit like Merino sheep, Comebacks do not have the skin folds around their necks that Merinos often do. Both male (rams) and female (ewes) Comeback sheep can either have horns or be naturally hornless (polled).

Adult male Comeback sheep, called rams, usually weigh around 90 kg (200 lb). Adult female sheep, called ewes, typically weigh about 60 kg (130 lb). When they are born, both male and female lambs weigh about 4.5 kg (9.9 lb).

How Are Comeback Sheep Bred?

Breeding Comeback sheep involves a specific two-step process. First, a male British Longwool sheep (a ram) is bred with a female Merino sheep (an ewe). The female lambs born from this first cross are then raised until they are old enough to breed.

In the second step, these female lambs are bred with a Merino ram. The lambs born from this second breeding are the Comeback sheep. This method helps to get the desired fine wool.

However, Comeback sheep are usually not bred with each other. If you breed a Comeback sheep with a Merino ram, the new lambs will have very fine wool but might be smaller. If you breed a Comeback sheep with a Longwool breed, the lambs will be mostly Longwool. Because of these breeding challenges, some farmers might choose to raise Polwarth Sheep instead, as they produce a similar type of wool and are easier to breed consistently.
