History of Comitán
The original town was built in a swampy area by a group of Tzeltal people. They called it Balún Canán, which means "Nine Stars."
When the Spanish arrived, they founded the town of Comitán in February 1528. It became a city in 1556. It was part of the area controlled by Guatemala back then. Later, its name was changed to Comitán de las Flores (Comitán of the Flowers).
In 1915, the name changed again to Comitán de Domínguez. This was to honor Dr. Belisario Domínguez. He was a brave politician who spoke out against a dictator named Victoriano Huerta. Sadly, he was murdered for his courage.
