The Commelinoideae is a large group of flowering plants. These plants belong to a bigger family called the Commelinaceae, also known as the dayflower family. Think of a family tree for plants; Commelinoideae is like a major branch on the dayflower family tree.
These plants are also known as monocotyledons, or "monocots" for short. This means their seeds usually have just one "seed leaf" when they sprout. Other plants, called dicots, have two seed leaves.

What are Commelinoideae?
The Commelinoideae is one of two main groups within the dayflower family. It's a very important group because it includes most of the plants in this family.
How many plants are in this group?
Out of 41 different groups (called genera) in the dayflower family, 39 of them belong to the Commelinoideae. This means almost all the hundreds of known species in the dayflower family are part of the Commelinoideae. Only a small number, about 12 species, are not in this subfamily.
Where do they grow?
Plants in the Commelinoideae group, like many dayflowers, can be found in various parts of the world. They often grow in warm, tropical, and subtropical regions. You might see them in gardens, fields, or even growing wild.
Examples of Commelinoideae plants
A good example of a plant in this group is the Commelina maculata, which is shown in the picture. Many plants in this subfamily are known for their pretty flowers, which often have three petals. Some are grown as ornamental plants because they look nice.
