Commerce is a small, quiet place in Wilson County, Tennessee, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the county. You can find Commerce about 11.5 miles (18.5 km) east-southeast of a bigger town called Lebanon.
What is the History of Commerce?
Commerce was officially planned and laid out in 1822. This process, called platting, means someone drew up maps showing where streets, lots, and public spaces would go. It was like designing a new neighborhood before anyone built anything!
A post office opened in Commerce in 1831. This was a big deal back then! It meant people could send and receive letters, which connected them to the outside world. The post office served the community for many years before closing in 1903.
The Historic Bailey Graveyard
One important historical spot in Commerce is the Bailey Graveyard. This graveyard is so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes places across the country that are special because of their history, architecture, or what they mean to American culture.
