Community facts for kids

A community is a group of living things that share something in common. This could be shared rules, beliefs, values, traditions, or even a sense of who they are. Communities often share a feeling of being in the same place. This place might be a country, town, or neighborhood. It can also be a virtual space online.
Strong connections that go beyond just family ties also help define a community. These connections are important for how people see themselves and their roles in society. Even though communities are usually small, the word "community" can also mean large groups. Examples include national communities, international communities, and virtual communities.
The English word "community" comes from the Old French word comuneté. This word then came from the Latin word communitas, meaning "community" or "public spirit." The Latin word communis means "common."
What Makes a Community?
People in communities often share many things. They might have similar goals, beliefs, or resources. They can also have similar preferences, needs, and risks. These shared things help shape who the people are and how strongly they stick together.
