The Commutation Act of 1784 was an important law passed by the British Parliament. It greatly lowered the tax on tea from a very high 119% down to just 12.5%. This change helped to stop the widespread problem of tea smuggling.
William Pitt the Younger, who was a key political leader at the time, suggested this new law. He got advice from Richard Twining of the famous Twinings Tea Company.
