Company of Angels facts for kids
Company of Angels, often called CoA, is a well-known American theatre company. It is based in Los Angeles, California, and was started way back in 1959. This makes it the oldest not-for-profit repertory theater in Los Angeles.
A "theatre company" is a group of people who work together to put on plays. CoA was first formed with the help of a lawyer named Bertram Fields. Some famous actors were part of the original group, including Richard Chamberlain, Leonard Nimoy, Vic Morrow, and Vic Tayback. Over the years, CoA has won many awards for its plays. These include the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award and the Ovation Award. The company keeps going thanks to its members who support it.
Where Company of Angels Began
The very first home for the Company of Angels was in Hollywood, Los Angeles. It was located on Vine Street and Waring Avenue. Sadly, a fire destroyed this building on April 27, 1988.
Moving to New Theaters
After the fire, the company found a new place in 1989. They moved to the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles. Their new theater was at 2106 Hyperion Avenue, which is now known as the Lyric Hyperion Theatre & Cafe.
Seventeen years later, the Company of Angels moved again. They left Silver Lake and went to the growing downtown Los Angeles area. After a short time at The Grand Avenue Club, CoA found its current home.
Current Home in Downtown Los Angeles
Today, the Company of Angels is based in the historic Alexandria Hotel. You can find them at 501 S. Spring Street in Downtown Los Angeles. Their space is located above the beautiful Palm Court inside the hotel.
