Victor "Vic" Tayback (born January 6, 1930 – died May 25, 1990) was an American actor. He was most famous for playing Mel Sharples, the owner of a diner, in the TV show Alice. This show ran from 1976 to 1985. He also appeared many times on another popular TV show called The Love Boat.
For his role in Alice, Vic Tayback won two Golden Globe Awards. These awards are given to people for great work in movies and TV. He was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award, which is another important award for TV shows.

Early Life
Vic Tayback was born in Brooklyn, New York. His parents, Helen and Najeeb James Tayback, had moved to the United States from Aleppo, a city in Syria.
When he was a teenager, his family moved to Burbank, California. He went to Burbank High School and finished in 1947. He also studied at Glendale Community College and learned about radio and TV broadcasting.
Acting Career
Before becoming an actor, Vic Tayback served in the United States Navy. He started acting when he was 25 years old. He was a member of the Actors Studio, a famous place where actors train.
You might have seen him in many TV shows during the 1960s and 1970s. Some of these include Star Trek, Bonanza, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and All in the Family. He also acted in several movies like Bullitt (1968) and Papillon (1973). Later, he lent his voice to the character Carface Caruthers in the animated movie All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989).
His most well-known role was Mel Sharples. He first played Mel in the 1974 movie Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. Then, he continued the role in the TV series Alice, which started in 1976. He was the only actor from the movie who also appeared in the TV show. For this role, he won two Golden Globe Awards in 1980 and 1981.
Personal Life
Vic Tayback was married to Sheila Maureen Barnard. They got married on March 16, 1963. They stayed together until his death in 1990. They had one son named Christopher, who was born in 1963. Christopher later became a lawyer.
Death
Vic Tayback passed away on May 25, 1990, when he was 60 years old. He died from a heart attack. He is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills) in California.
