The BBVA Building is a tall office building in Downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was first called the National Building. This building is located at 505 Marquette Avenue NW.

When it was finished in 1966, it was the tallest building in New Mexico. It held this record until 1990. That's when the Albuquerque Plaza towers were built. Today, the BBVA Building is the third tallest building in the city.

How Tall Is It?

The BBVA Building stands about 238 feet (72.5 meters) tall. It has 18 floors. The lowest six floors are used as a parking garage for cars. If you include the antennas on the roof, the building reaches a height of about 272 feet (82.9 meters).

Building History

Work on the BBVA Building started on January 25, 1965. It was completed in 1966. Before this building, the Bank of the West Tower was the tallest. The National Building Corporation of Tennessee developed this project.

What Does It Look Like?

The building was designed by an architect named William E. Burk, Jr. He also designed another building called the Park Plaza Condominiums. The BBVA Building has twelve floors of office space. These sit on top of a wider base that is six stories tall. This wider base includes the parking garage from the second to the sixth floor.

The outside walls of the parking levels are made of molded concrete. They have an open pattern that looks like a fancy grillwork. This pattern is inspired by Moorish architecture, which is a style from North Africa and Spain. The upper office floors have windows that are set back a bit. They are arranged in a simple grid pattern. The windows have slanted edges around them. At the ground level, the walls are made of stone and lean slightly inwards. They have narrow, paired windows on the south side.
