Compton was a small, historic community in western Webster County, Missouri. It had a post office for many years. Today, it's mostly known as a former settlement.
Where was Compton located?
The community of Compton was located near the James River. One spot for its post office was right along the river, near Missouri Route B. Another location was about three-quarters of a mile southeast. This second spot was close to or inside the Compton Hollow Conservation Area. It was also about three miles south of Northview.
How did Compton get its name?
A post office opened in Compton in 1884. It stayed open until 1906. The community was named after John Compton. He was the person who originally owned the land where the town was built.
What is the Compton Limestone?
A special type of rock layer, called the Compton Limestone, was named after this community. This is because the main places where this rock layer was first studied and described were located nearby. Geologists often name rock layers after places where they are clearly visible.
