Concepción Mendizábal Mendoza (born March 4, 1893 – died November 23, 1985) was a pioneering Mexican civil engineer. She made history by becoming the first woman in Mexico to earn a civil engineering degree. Concepción studied at the famous Palacio de Minería starting in 1921. She successfully passed her engineering exam on February 11, 1930, marking a huge step for women in science.

Her Early Life and Education

Concepción Mendizábal was born in Mexico City on March 4, 1893. Her father, Joaquín de Mendizábal y Tamborrel, was also an engineer. His career inspired her greatly from a young age.

She attended primary school between 1913 and 1917. After that, she went to a normal school, which is a special school for training teachers. She also took extra classes in math.

In 1921, Concepción began taking engineering classes. She studied at the Escuela Nacional de Ingenieros, located in the historic Palacio de Minería. At first, she just "audited" the classes. This means she attended them without being officially enrolled for credit.

Later, her courses from the normal school were accepted. This meant she had the equivalent of a bachelor's degree. She could then officially enroll in the engineering program.

Becoming an Engineer

While Concepción was studying, her father became ill. He sadly passed away in 1926. Despite this difficult time, she returned to school with determination. She earned very high grades in all her classes.

Concepción graduated in 1927. In January 1930, she applied to take the professional exam for engineers. Her thesis (a big research paper) was special because it included many photographs.

On February 11, 1930, she passed her exam. This made her the very first woman in Mexico to earn a civil engineering degree. It was a huge achievement for her and for women everywhere.

Her Career and Legacy

After becoming an engineer, Concepción Mendizábal worked with the Sociedad Científica Antonio Alzate. This was a scientific society that her father had helped to create.

Her important contributions were recognized in 1974. She was honored with the Ruth Rivera award. This award celebrates outstanding achievements.

Concepción Mendizábal passed away on November 23, 1985. She left behind a legacy as a trailblazer for women in engineering.
