The Confederation Bridge is a very long bridge in Canada. It connects the province of New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island. This bridge is part of the main road system called the Trans Canada Highway. It stretches for 12.9 kilometers (about 8 miles) across the water.

Building a Giant Bridge

The Confederation Bridge was built over several years. Construction started in October 1993. It took almost four years to finish this huge project. The bridge officially opened on May 31, 1997. Building the bridge cost about $1.3 billion.

How to Cross the Bridge

When you cross the Confederation Bridge, you usually pay a fee called a toll. As of January 1, 2020, the cost to cross depends on your vehicle. For example, motorcycles pay $19.25, and regular cars with two axles pay $48.50.

People walking or riding bicycles can also cross the bridge. However, they need to ride a special shuttle bus. This shuttle costs $4.50 for pedestrians and $9 for cyclists.
