The Confederation of Danish Industry (DI) is a very important group for businesses in Denmark. It's the country's biggest organization for companies and employers. DI helps companies and their workers.
Over 18,000 private companies are members of DI. These companies make things (manufacturing) or offer services (like shops or tech companies). Many smaller groups of employers and specific industry branches are also part of DI. In different parts of Denmark, DI members form local groups. These groups work on local rules and education. DI also speaks for its members in public talks about new ideas and current events in Denmark. The main leader of DI is Lars Sandahl Sørensen.
How DI Started and Grew
The first group for employers in Denmark began in 1885. It was started by iron industry companies in Copenhagen. This group was called Foreningen af Fabrikanter i Jernindustrien i København.
A national group for iron industry employers started in 1902. It was named Sammenslutningen af Arbejdsgivere inden for Jernindustrien i Danmark. In the 1980s, this group changed its name to Jernets Arbejdsgiverforening. Other companies that made things were part of another group called Arbejdsgiverforeningen Industrifagene.
These two employer groups joined together on January 1, 1990. They formed a new organization called Industriens Arbejdsgivere. Then, in 1992, Industriens Arbejdsgivere merged with another group called Industrirådet. They created the organization known as Dansk Industri. On May 1, 2008, Dansk Industri merged again with HTS Handel, Transport og Service. This final merger created the organization we know today as DI.
How DI is Managed
DI is funded and owned by its many member companies. A special council and an executive committee lead the organization. These leaders are chosen by the members at their yearly meeting. DI has about 600 employees who handle the daily work.
Lars-Peter Søbye became the president of the executive committee in September 2017. He took over from Lars Mikkelgaard-Jensen.
What DI Does for Businesses
DI has three main types of activities to help its members and the country:
- Speaking Up for Businesses: DI talks to local, national, and international leaders. They share ideas and concerns from businesses. This helps shape rules and decisions that affect companies.
- Helping Its Members: DI gives its members useful information and advice. They offer consulting services to help companies solve problems and grow.
- Building Connections: DI helps its members connect with each other. They also help businesses connect with the wider community. This creates strong networks for support and new ideas.
