The Congregational Church, also known as the United Church of Christ, is an old and important church building in Berlin, New Hampshire. It was built in 1882. This church was the very first one built in the community. It's a great example of a building style called Stick/Eastlake Victorian architecture. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means it's a special building worth protecting. The people who worship here are part of the United Church of Christ group.

About the Church Building

The Congregational Church in Berlin is located just north of the downtown area. You can find it on the west side of Main Street. It's a single-story building made of wood. The roof is very steep and shaped like a triangle.

What It Looks Like

The outside of the church has different types of wood. It has flat wooden boards called clapboards and also shingles. You can also see special wooden decorations. These decorations are part of the "Stick-style" of architecture.

A part of the building sticks out on the left side near the back. There's also a tall, square tower at the front left corner. This tower has several levels. It has narrow windows, and some of them are arched like in old Gothic buildings. At the top of the tower, there's an open area where bells would be. This part is called a belfry. It has a pointy roof that flares out at the bottom.

Church History

The Congregationalist group in Berlin first started in 1836. That year, they set up a Sunday School. The first minister was hired the next year, in 1837.

For a while, the church members met in different places. They often met in people's homes or even in barns. Later, in 1852, the owners of the H. Winslow store let them use their upstairs hall for services. The church building you see today was built in 1882. It was the first building made just for the church in the community. The land for the church was given by the Berlin Mills Company.
