The Congregational Church of Edgecomb, now known as the Edgecomb Community Church, is a historic building. You can find it at 15 Cross Point Road in North Edgecomb, Maine. This church was built in 1877. It's a great example of 19th-century church architecture in this rural community. Because of its importance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The church group started around 1783. Today, it is part of the United Church of Christ.

What Does the Church Look Like?

The Congregational Church of Edgecomb is located in northern Edgecomb. It sits on the west side of Cross Point Road. This church is a single-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and its outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. The building rests on a brick foundation.

The Church Tower

A tall tower sticks out from the front of the church. This tower has two main parts. The bottom part is tall and holds the main entrance door. Above the door, there is a special window. It looks like three windows joined together, with rounded tops. The corners of this part of the tower have fancy carved boards.

The top part of the tower is an open bell tower. It has rounded arch openings where the bells would be. The tower is topped with an eight-sided steeple.

Windows and Inside Features

On either side of the tower, there are narrow windows with rounded tops. The sides of the church building have wider windows, also with rounded arches. Inside the church, you can still see the original wooden details. There are even old oil-lamp chandeliers. These have been changed to use electric lights now.

How Old is the Church?

The first records of the Edgecomb church group go back to 1783. That's a very long time ago! The group used to meet in the town hall. Later, they met in a school. This continued until the current church building was finished in 1881. The rounded arch windows on this church are quite unique. Many other country churches from that time in Maine look different.
