Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Congress of Deputies (called Congreso de los Diputados in Spanish) is an important part of Spain's government. Think of it as one of the two main groups that make laws for the country. It's often called the "lower house" of Spain's parliament, which is known as the Cortes Generales. This group meets in a special building called the Palace of the Parliament in Madrid, the capital city of Spain.

What is the Congress of Deputies?

The Congress of Deputies is where elected representatives from all over Spain come together. Their main job is to create and approve laws that affect everyone in the country. They also discuss important issues and keep an eye on what the government is doing.

What Does the Congress Do?

The members of the Congress of Deputies have several key roles:

  • They vote on new laws and changes to existing ones.
  • They approve the country's budget, which decides how government money is spent.
  • They can ask questions to government ministers and hold them accountable.
  • They also play a part in choosing the Prime Minister of Spain.

How are Members Chosen?

People who want to be part of the Congress of Deputies are chosen by citizens in elections. When you turn 18 in Spain, you get to vote for the people you want to represent you in the Congress. These elections happen regularly, usually every four years. Each member represents a part of Spain and brings the ideas and concerns of their region to the national discussions.

Where Do They Meet?

The Congress of Deputies meets in a grand building in Madrid called the Palacio de las Cortes. This historic palace was built in 1850 and is a well-known landmark. It has a famous front with columns and statues, including two large lion sculptures guarding the entrance. Inside, there's a large hall where all the members gather to debate and vote.
