Connad Cerr facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Connad Cerr (also known as Connad the Left-handed) was an important leader in the early 600s. He was a king of a kingdom called Dál Riata. This kingdom was located in what is now parts of Scotland and Ireland.

Historians believe Connad was either the son of Conall mac Comgaill or Eochaid Buide. He might have even ruled alongside Eochaid Buide during the 620s.

Connad's Time as King

Connad Cerr became known as a king of Dál Riata around the year 627. During this time, he led his people to an important victory. He won a battle against Fiachnae mac Demmáin, who was the king of the Ulaid people. This battle took place at a place called Ard Corann.

The End of His Reign

Connad's rule ended when he was killed in a battle. This battle was called Fid Eóin. He was fighting against the Dál nAraidi people, who were led by a person named Máel Caích. Máel Caích was the brother of Congal Cáech.

Different historical records tell us about this event. The Annals of Ulster say the battle happened in 629. The Annals of Tigernach say it was in 630. Both records agree that Connad died before Eochaid Buide.

His Family and Legacy

Connad Cerr had a son named Ferchar. Ferchar later became a king himself. An old book, the Book of Ballymote, suggests that Connad's family members were connected to "the men of Fife". Fife is a region in modern-day Scotland.
