Eochaid Buide facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Eochaid Buide was a king of Dál Riata, an ancient kingdom located in parts of modern-day Scotland and Ireland. He ruled from about 608 AD until 629 AD. His name "Buide" means "yellow" in the Gaelic language, which likely referred to the color of his hair. He was an important leader during his time.

Who Was King Eochaid Buide?

Eochaid Buide was a younger son of Áedán mac Gabráin, who was also a powerful king. Even though he had older brothers, Eochaid was chosen by his father to be the next king. This happened after his older brothers passed away. A famous holy man named Columba even predicted that Eochaid would become king when he was just a child. This story is told in a book called Life of Saint Columba by Adomnán.

A Safe Haven for Royalty

In 616 AD, Eochaid Buide played a kind and important role in history. He offered safety to a queen named Acha of Deira and her children. Acha's husband, King Æthelfrith, had been killed in a battle, and she needed a safe place to go.

While Acha and her children stayed at Eochaid's court, they learned about Christianity and decided to become Christians. Later, when Acha's sons returned to England to reclaim their kingdom, they brought their new Christian faith with them. This helped spread Christianity in England. Acha's daughter, Æbbe, even went on to start a special monastery.

Ruling and Successors

Towards the end of his reign, from 627 to 629 AD, Eochaid seems to have shared his power with another ruler named Connad Cerr. However, Connad Cerr passed away before Eochaid did. After Eochaid Buide's time as king ended, his son, Domnall Brecc, took over the throne of Dál Riata.

Eochaid had several other sons, including Conall Crandomna and Failbe. Some historical stories also mention that Eochaid Buide was the grandfather of a person named Congal Cáech. These stories help us understand the family connections and history of the kings of Dál Riata.
