Conocotocko I facts for kids
Conocotocko of Chota, known in English as Old Hop, was an important Cherokee leader. His Cherokee name was Gvnagadoga (pronounced GAH-nah-gah-DOE-gah), which means "Standing Turkey." He served as the First Beloved Man of the Cherokee people from 1753 until he passed away in 1760. The "First Beloved Man" was a very respected leader, similar to a principal chief, who helped guide the Cherokee Nation. European settlers often called him Old Hop.
Old Hop was the uncle of another famous Cherokee leader, Attakullakulla, who was also known as Little Carpenter.
Historian Fred Gearing described Old Hop as a leader who was very good at bringing people together. When different groups among the Cherokee had disagreements, Old Hop had a special way of helping them find common ground. He often avoided making big decisions himself, preferring to guide others to their own solutions. He was known for being very calm and patient, even when others around him were quick to act. Old Hop was seen as a perfect example of what a good Cherokee leader should be: careful, thoughtful, and wise.
