Conrad House facts for kids
Conrad Glenn House (born November 1956, died January 2001) was a talented artist. He used many different kinds of art to share his ideas. Conrad was from the Navajo (also called Diné) and Oneida Native American groups. His art helped change how people saw Native American art. He used symbols and images from his own culture and from cultures around the world. His artworks are now in famous places like the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. You can also find his art in the Portland Art Museum and many other museums worldwide.
Conrad House: A Visionary Native American Artist
Conrad House was known as a "multimedia artist." This means he didn't just use one type of art. He worked with many different materials and styles. He wanted to keep the stories and symbols of his Navajo and Oneida heritage alive. He also looked at art from other cultures around the world. His unique approach helped redefine what "Indian art" meant. He showed that Native American art could be modern and creative, while still honoring old traditions.
The Conrad House Award
After Conrad House passed away, the Heard Museum Guild created a special award in his honor. In 2002, they started the "Conrad House Award for the Most Innovative Artist."
