Jody Folwell facts for kids
Jody Folwell-Turipa was born in 1942 in Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico. She is a famous Puebloan potter and artist. Jody comes from the Naranjo family, who are well-known potters from Santa Clara. She is one of nine children.
Jody is famous for her unique and modern pottery style. She is often called an "avant-garde" potter. This means she creates art that is new and different. A gallery owner named Lee Cohen even called her the "first impressionist potter." This was because her pots were innovative and not perfectly round. They often had uneven edges and unique shapes. Jody also uses her pots to share her thoughts on society. She sometimes uses humor or satire in her art.
Her Amazing Art
In 1984, Jody worked with Chiricahua Apache sculptor Bob Haozous. Together, they created a special pot. This pot won the "Best of Show" award at the Santa Fe Indian Market. This is a very important art show for Native American artists.
Jody's pots are so important that they are kept in museums. You can see her work in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian. This means her art will be saved and shown for many years.
A Family of Artists
Jody Folwell comes from a family of talented potters. Her mother, Rose Naranjo, was also a respected potter from Santa Clara. Jody has two daughters, Susan Folwell and Polly Rose Folwell. Both of her daughters are also very skilled potters.
In 2009 and 2010, the Heard Museum had a special art show. It was called Mothers & Daughters: Stories in Clay. This exhibition featured the beautiful pottery of Jody, Susan, and Polly Rose. It showed how artistic talent can be passed down through families.
Jody loves making pottery. She once said, "I think of each piece as an artwork that has something to say on its own, a statement about life." She sees herself as both a modern and a traditional potter. Combining these two styles is very exciting for her.
