A Family of Artists
Jody Folwell-Turipa grew up in the Naranjo family. This family from Santa Clara Pueblo is well-known for its many artists. Jody is one of nine children. She became one of the most famous modern Pueblo potters.
Her Unique Pottery Style
Jody Folwell's pottery is very special. A gallery owner once called her the "first impressionist potter." This is because her pots are not perfectly round. They often have uneven edges and unique shapes. Her work is also known for sharing ideas about society. She sometimes uses humor in her art.
In 1984, Jody worked with Chiricahua Apache sculptor Bob Haozous. Together, they made a pot that won a top award. This was at the Santa Fe Indian Market. Her beautiful pots are also kept in important places. You can see them at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.
Legacy and Family Potters
Jody Folwell has two daughters, Susan Folwell and Polly Rose Folwell. Both of her daughters are also very talented potters. In 2009 and 2010, the Heard Museum held a special art show. It featured works by Jody, Susan, and Polly Rose. The show was called Mothers & Daughters: Stories in Clay. Jody's mother, Rose Naranjo, was also a respected potter from Santa Clara.
Jody believes each of her pots tells a story. She sees her art as a statement about life. She feels she is both a modern artist and a traditional one. Combining these two styles is very exciting for her.
