Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Constituent Assembly of Pakistan was Pakistan's first ever parliament. It was like a special group of people chosen to create the rules for the new country. This assembly first met on August 10, 1947, just before Pakistan became independent.

What was the Constituent Assembly?

The Constituent Assembly was a very important group. Its main job was to write a new constitution for Pakistan. A constitution is like a rulebook that explains how a country will be governed.

The First Assembly's Start

On August 11, 1947, a day after the assembly first met, Muhammad Ali Jinnah (1876-1948) was chosen as its President. He was also chosen as the first Governor-General of Pakistan. The assembly quickly approved the new national flag. On August 14, 1947, Jinnah gave an important speech. In this speech, he talked about the key ideas for how the new independent Pakistan would be run.

Writing the Constitution

Writing a constitution was a big and difficult task. However, the assembly made an important step on March 12, 1949. They agreed on something called the "Objective Resolution." This resolution laid out the main goals and principles for the new constitution.

A special group of 24 members from the assembly worked hard. They used the ideas from the Objective Resolution to draft the new constitution. But, before they could finish and present it, something unexpected happened. On October 24, 1954, the Governor-General at the time, Ghulam Muhammad, closed down the assembly.

A New Start: The Second Assembly

Even though the first assembly was closed, the work to create a constitution continued. A second Constituent Assembly of Pakistan was formed on May 28, 1955. This new assembly successfully wrote the constitution. It finally became law on March 23, 1956. This was a major step for Pakistan as an independent nation.
